Here’s a massive behind the scenes look at Flash 4 which is out on the stands now! Here are some of my pencils side by side with my inks and water color tones.

The cover for the issue, I’m not sure if anybody noticed is actually a recap of the entire issue 3 plot. I was hoping that people would “read” the cover as a refresher of what happened in the previous issue since Flash 4’s story mainly focused on Manuel’s back story. In a sense it almost works as a “first page” type of cover as it’s meant to be read rather than just gazed at. Always great to have an opportunity to try something different.

I had a lot of fun with this issue, it allowed me to experiment with my layouts even more. With the Flash not appearing until the end of the story, I thought that the book needed a more visual hook to keep the readers stimulated as they waited for the Flash’s arrival.  Brian and I are really happy with the story, we wanted to keep up the tension with what happened to Barry. With the absence of Barry/Flash till the end, we wanted to keep the readers in the dark a bit longer in order to “feel” what Manuel and Patty were feeling. I’d like to think it worked, but I know some readers were clamoring for more Flash. However set your worries aside, as you will see plenty of Flash in #5, and specially #6.
